The Martin Marprelate tracts are the most famous pamphlets of the English Renaissance; to their contemporaries they were the most notorious. About time!

Joseph Black's edited and annotated edition of the Martin Marprelate Tracts is the best one available. Well, actually, it's the only one available. The Marprelate Tracts have not had an fully edited edition in about 100 years. The publication of these tracts truly is an event and Black should be commended for the undertaking. In his introduction Black points out that it took him longer to edit the tracts than for Throckmorton to write them and for the printers to carry their presses "from sympathetic house to sympathetic house" to print them. He did an excellent job. His extensive introduction contextualizes the Marprelate Tracts and discusses their historical significance. Each tract is heavily annotated with relevant endnotes (that's right, ENDNOTES) and is prefaced by a short introduction and printing history. I really cannot say enough good things about this book other than it is about time that they available. I recommend this book for upper division undergraduate courses and graduate courses in early modern English literature and history. Now that there is a modern edition, I have a feeling that this book is going to appear on a lot of MA and PhD prelim/comp reading lists. Bravo!
