About the Author
Patrick Seale worked for Reuters news agency for six years and for more than a dozen years on the staff of The Observer as Middle East correspondent, Paris correspondent, and roving correspondent in Africa and the Indian subcontinent. He currently runs a consultancy on Middle East affairs. He has written extensively on the Middle East and his other books include Asad: The Struggle for the Middle East (1998, 1992) and Abu Nidal: A Gun for Hire (1992).

A must read!

Even though I read the French translation of this book by Dominique Letellier and Aline Weil, I believe it is close enough to the original to warrant a review. But as usual with all French translations, there is always a tendency to twist things a little bit: the "Makers of the Modern Middle East" is rendered as "la naissance du Moyen-Orient moderne". Clearly, Patrick Seale, had he intended it, could have used the expression "birth of the Modern Middle East". But this is just an aside...In itself, this book is excellent: well researched, it contains a wealth of information about the history of the Middle East in the first half of the twentieth century. And although centered around Riad El-Solh, it covers nearly every aspect of the events that took place during those fateful years.
True, Patrick Seale cannot conceal both his sympathy to the Arab nationalist cause, and his latent francophobia: in this, he looks to me as the spiritual inheritor of Sir Edward Spears, the man who played such an important role in the achievement of independence for both Syria and Lebanon.Also, he doesn't seem to be very fond of the maronites, but it's fine with me: even though a maronite myself, I have never subscribed to all that my forefathers did!
However, and as usual with Europeans writing about the Middle East, there is an inevitable confusion when it comes to spelling Arabic names. Patrick Seale's biography states that he has studied Arabic, but this language is so treacherous that it takes more than some casual learning to master...Thus, he refers to the maronite Patriarch Elias Hwayek as Hayek, and he confuses Asad with As'ad(like in Ahmad Al-As'ad) for the PPS leader Asad Al-Achkar, even though he has written a book about Hafez Al-Asad! Habib Pacha Al-Saad becomes Sa'id, just like Nuri...and so forth. There is no avoiding this sort of thing, and the Western reader wouldn't mind at all, if there is such a reader for this book! But there are more blatant errors:
- A photo of three rebels hanged supposedly by the French shows soldiers wearing the typical Turkish headgear!
- In Chapter XIII, the newspaper An-Nahar is said to have been founded by Ghassan Twayni, whereas in fact it was founded by Ghassan's father, Gebran.
- In Chapter XIV, Antoun Saade supposedly had a "tent in a tree in the village of Al-'Arzal near Dhur Al-Shwayr", whereas in fact the word 'arzal in Arabic refers to the "tent in the tree" itself! There is no such village anywhere in Lebanon!Besides, Antoun Saade was referred to as "Zaim" not "Rais".
- In Chapter XXII, Bishara Al-Khoury is said to have been deeply shaken by the suicide of his "wife's niece, Magda, a young woman he considered as his daughter. Her parents were Marie Chiha-Haddad, the sister of Laure Chiha, Bishara's spouse, and Michel Chiha, his friend and faithful partisan..." Here I couldn't help laughing out loud: Michel Chiha is Laure's brother, and therefore Marie's brother as well!! He was the uncle of Magda, who was a follower of a charlatan named Dr Dahesh who had convinced some people he was a prophet! In her memoirs, Magda talks about both Bishara Al-Khoury and her aunt Laure as murderers, because they were responsible for the arrest and imprisonment of the "prophet"...
But all these trivia put aside, this is an excellent book, and all Lebanese and Syrians willing to learn about the history of their countries, from sources other than official textbooks, should read it. And those who want to know exactly how Palestine was lost will be well served: Seale summarizes brilliantly the two main reasons for this, namely the ineptitude of the Arab countries and their petty rivalries on the one hand, and the complicity of the British with the Sionists on the other...
