About the Author
Stephen James O'Meara is author of several highly acclaimed books, including others in the celebrated Deep-Sky Companions series. He is well known for his precise drawings of astronomical objects as seen through the telescope, his engaging and informative writing style and for his remarkable skills as a visual observer. Steve spent much of his early career on the editorial staff of Sky and Telescope, before joining Astronomy magazine as its Secret Sky columnist and a contributing editor. An award-winning visual observer, he was the first person to sight Halley's Comet on its return in 1985 and the first to determine visually the rotation period of Uranus. One of his most distinguished feats was the visual detection of the mysterious spokes in Saturn's B-ring before most spacecraft imaged them. Amongst his achievements, Steve has received the prestigious Lone Stargazer Award, the Omega Centauri Award and the Caroline Herschel Award. Asteroid 3637 was named O'Meara in his honor by the International Astronomical Union. In his spare time, Steve travels the world to document volcanic eruptions. He is a contract videographer for National Geographic Digital Motion and a contract photographer for the National Geographic Image Collection.

Excellent addition to the Deep Sky Companions series...

This is the fourth volume of what has become a series: Deep Sky Companions. The previous 3 volumes covered the "Messier Objects in the first volume, and the so-called "Caldwell Objects" in volume two. I have not yet read volume three, "Hidden Treasures," but after this volume "The Secret Deep," be assured that the third volume will be purchased shortly.

I gave this particular work only 4 stars...not for any lack in Mr. O'Meara's writing skills, but the object selection is tending towards "lame," to use a phrase from my young son. The number of interesting astronomical objects capable of being dredged up in a small (in this case a 5" refractor)telescope is reaching a point of diminishing return, especially if one does not have the pristine skies of the island of Hawaii! That said, I have observed numerous objects listed in the book. Some of the open star clusters aren't what one would call "spectacular" to say the least, but the selection of planetary nebulae and globular clusters is wonderful. I've viewed many of these on my own over the past 10 years.

The format is excellent, and the finding directions...adequate. These are not easy astronomical objects to find and observe in many cases. That said, I would still recommend the purchase of this volume by any serious backyard astronomer. It's always nice to have new horizons to follow, and many of the listed objects have been added to my "to do" list. For those without pristine skies, a larger aperture telescope would be nearly a "must."

A Very Good Companion Book

Stephen O Mearas latest book The Secret Deep is a good companion book to his Hidden Treasures book.
I like to get background information to complement my observing list of deep-sky objects, and O Mearas books deal with
many in my list. It is not meant to be a book you just sit down and read, but as reference material it is in my opinion
unsurpassed.

As a Seattle area residents it is not often that we can appreciate the night sky thru our 8 inch SCT so Steve's book provides some excellent opportunities to enjoy what the sky has in store for us when it is very clear. We have just started using this book but our reading of it is exciting and challenging.

The photographs are stunning, the numerous charts and graphs are exemplary, and the narrative is bulging with all the important information about the solar system that is available to date. The author has done a wonderful job of making many of the complicated scientific concepts accessible to the layperson. The language is challenging for students younger than high school, but many of the charts, graphs, maps, captions, sidebars, and introductions should be understandable to middle-school readers.

The beginning chapters are an overview of the field of space science, with emphasis on discoveries, discoverers, and tools. The major planets and the moon have their own chapters. Uranus and Neptune are treated in the same chapter, because they are so similar. Pluto has no chapter at all, because it is no longer considered a major planet. Chapters on comets, asteroids and meteorites, and colliding worlds end the narrative. The lengthy chapters follow the same layout, beginning with lists of important fundamental facts, histories of explorations and discoveries, and descriptions of the atmosphere, landforms, and moons. Each planet chapter ends with a summary diagram of the essential makeup of the planet. The numerous photographs are a balanced mixture of large black and white and color, most from NASA files. There are rich appendixes of books and Web sites and a good index.

Anyone with a need for information on the solar system should find fulfillment in the pages of this handsome work, and it is a beautiful browsing book. More current and less technical than Encyclopedia of the Solar System (Academic, 1998), it is recommended for high-school, public, and academic libraries.

About the Author
Kenneth R. Lang is a Professor of Astronomy at Tufts University. He is a well-known author and has published 25 books. The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the Sun (Cambridge University Press, 2001) was recommended by the Library Journal as one of the best reference books published that year. He has extensive teaching experience, and has served as a Visiting Senior Scientist at NASA headquarters.

Well balanced!

This book is written in a clear and easy to read style. If you are a novice on astronomy you will still be able to understand the text. At the same time this book offers enough in-depth and up-to-date information to satisfy the person who is more knowledgeable on the subject. The text is richly illustrated, with a multitude of photographs, charts, schematics, drawings etc.

The first three chapters of the book deal with general subjects like the history of astronomy, the forming of impact craters, the principles of volcanism in the solar system, the (presumed) existence of water on several solar objects, the characteristics of atmospheres of planets and Titan etc. etc. After this there are separate chapters about the earth, our moon, the asteroids, comets and all planets. Unexpectedly, although understandable in view of their similarities, Uranus and Neptune are put together in one chapter. Even more peculiar is the fact that there is not a separate chapter about Pluto and its companion Charon. They are described in four pages in one of the general chapters. So Pluto is not treated as a real planet but more as an object of the Kuiper-belt. The last chapter of the book is called "Worlds colliding" and deals with the impact in 1994 of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 into Jupiter, collisions of comets with the sun, existing impact craters on earth and the chances of disaster by incoming asteroids/meteoroids.

All in all I find this a very nice book that should appeal to both beginners in the field as to the more knowledgeable "amateur-astronomers" among us. In this way it is a "well balanced" book.

sloppy errors let down a good publication

although this is an extensive and comprehensive guide to the solar system as understood in modern science, there are several editorial errors which let the publication down; the example that springs to mind is the mistake made in kepler's third law, written as P³ = a², which should read P² = a³; maybe nitpicking, but its a pretty bad error and there are others at several points which are misleading for anyone trying to understand the scientific model by which we explain the workings of our solar system. shame, because otherwise it has alot of information and is easily understandable.

This is a hugely informative compendium of current knowledge of our solar system. Included is up-to-date science, compiled from the missions of all the modern spacecraft, of all (make that most) of the planets plus all of their known moons; plus comets, asteroids, solar winds, magnetic fields, and everything else present in the solar system. A bonus is found in the beginning chapters of the book, which present the history of astronomical discovery by earthbound explorers, and also a large chapter on Earth itself. And while the book is uniformly fascinating and informative, one humbug for me is a nearly complete lack of coverage for Pluto. This is likely because we haven't yet been able to send a spacecraft there, and also because the creators of this book have followed the currently accepted scientific theory of Pluto as a non-planet that doesn't deserve the attention of the "real" planets. Serious history

This volume is an important addition to any library for those who are serious students of Chinese History. The writing, as with all volumes in this series, is extremely dry and monotonous. Thus, unless one is heavily invested in such histories, it would not provide interesting reading. The most serious gaff, however, is the editors continued use of Wade-Giles for Chinese language and name translation. There is no excuse for this. Anyone who is serious enough to read these volumes would have to have made the transition to Pinyin some time ago. That the editors refuse to adapt might be an indication of their own biases. If the writing were more entertaining (- one star) and if the editors had used Pinyin (- one star), the book could have reached a five-star rating.

Larry Frohman has been Assistant Professor of History, State University of New York at Stony Brook since 2002. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley with a dissertation on the German philosopher Wilhelm DIlthey, and he has published several articles relating to social hygiene, social welfare, and the welfare state.

Mohammad S. Obaidat, recognized around the world for his pioneering and lasting contributions to several areas, including wireless sensor networks, green ICT, wireless and wired networks, performance evaluation of computer systems and networks, and information and network security, is a Professor of Computer Science at Monmouth University, New Jersey. He is the editor-in-chief or editor of many international journals, and has published over thirty books and over six hundred technical papers to date. He has received numerous awards, including a Nokia Research Fellowship, Distinguished Fulbright Scholar Award, McLeod Founder's Award, SCS Presidential Award, SCS Hall of Fame- Lifetime Achievement Award, and Best Paper awards in many conferences. He has given numerous keynote speeches at international conferences worldwide and has chaired numerous international conferences. He is a distinguished speaker/lecturer of ACM and SCS and served as a distinguished speaker of IEEE-CS. He also served as the Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Director of the Graduate Program at Monmouth University, SCS President, and Advisor to the President of Philadelphia University. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of SCS.

Sudip Misra is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has authored over two hundred scholarly research papers and published eight books. He has received several prestigious awards such as the IEEE ComSoc Asia Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award, Canadian Government's prestigious NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Humboldt Research Fellowship in Germany, the NASI Young Scientist Award, and the IEI Young Engineers Award. About the Author
Gregory Nellis is the Elmer R. and Janet A. Kaiser Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) and the Cryogenic Society of America (CSA). Professor Nellis carries out applied research that is related to energy systems with a focus on refrigeration technology and he has published more than 40 journal papers. Professor Nellis' focus has been on graduate and undergraduate education, and he has received the Polygon, Pi Tau Sigma and Woodburn awards for excellence in teaching as well as the Boom Award for excellence in cryogenic research. He is the co-author of Heat Transfer (2009) with Sanford Klein.

Its good book but....

I took the Thermodynamics class that Mr. Klein taught at UW-Madison. This is the first edition of the book and also it was the first time he was using it for a class.
Overall the book has a practical solved example problems, all of which are solved in EES, which is great. The downside is that there aren't enough examples. The problems you would like to solve/learn how to do are are at the end of the chapters and these are neither solved nor have a final answer written under them.
I wouldn't recommend this book if you were trying to learn the material for the first time, but if you did want learn extensively about the functionality of EES(which the author created) this is a good book. If there was a solution manual out there(which there isn't, and is available only to instructors) I would say this is a great book. In fact, I'm looking for a good thermodynamics textbook containing EES problems(and the solutions!) right now.
