The Global Governance of Knowledge: Patent Offices and their Clients, by Peter Drahos

Patent offices around the world have granted millions of patents to multinational companies. Patent offices are rarely studied and yet they are crucial agents in the global knowledge economy. Based on a study of forty-five rich and poor countries that takes in the world's largest and smallest offices, Peter Drahos argues that patent offices have become part of a globally integrated private governance network, which serves the interests of multinational companies, and that the Trilateral Offices of Europe, the USA and Japan make developing country patent offices part of the network through the strategic fostering of technocratic trust. By analysing the obligations of patent offices under the patent social contract and drawing on a theory of nodal governance, the author proposes innovative approaches to patent office administration that would allow developed and developing countries to recapture the public spirit of the patent social contract.

'Professor Peter Drahos, one of the most influential scholars in the area of intellectual property rights, explores in this book a subject largely ignored by the existing literature. His interdisciplinary study unveils how patent offices actually work in about 20 countries, and how they contribute to make up the global patent system. Based on a solid theoretical framework and on a vast and rigorous empirical research, Drahos makes an outstanding contribution to the understanding of international governance and regulation in this area of crucial importance for developed and developing countries alike.' Carlos M. Correa, Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Industrial Property and Economics Law, at the University of Buenos Aires

'... the lightness and clarity of his writing makes the book remarkably entertaining as well as hugely informative. It will be an invaluable resource for everyone involved in or concerned about the Knowledge Society and that should mean all of us!' Sir John Sulston, Chair of the Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation, University of Manchester

'... Professor Drahos' book offers a timely and thought-provoking review ... Suitable for readers in law, politics, and the wider social sciences, Global Governance of Knowledge is a highly readable and engaging analysis ... This is a book that deserves to be widely read not only for the serious implications it carries for economic development, but also as a work that is well researched, cogently argued and written with a clarity of conception that marks distinguished scholarship.' European Intellectual Property Review

'The book is well-researched, engaging, and filled to the brim with thought-provoking nuggets of current and historical information.' Margot A. Bagley, The IP Law Book Review

A Guide to the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, by Clyde Croft SC, Christopher Kee, Jeff Waincymer

The first version of the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules was endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1976. Now considered one of UNCITRAL's greatest successes, the rules have had an extraordinary impact on international arbitration as both instruments in their own right and as guides for others. The Iran-US Claims Tribunal, for example, employs a barely modified version of the rules for all claims, and many multilateral and bilateral foreign investment treaties adopt the UNCITRAL Rules as an arbitral procedure. The Rules are so pervasive and the consequences of the new version potentially so significant that they cannot be ignored. This commentary on the Rules brings the official documents together in one volume and includes the insights and experiences of the Working Group that are not included in the official reports.

Nature and the Godly Empire: Science and Evangelical Mission in the Pacific, 1795-1850 (Cambridge Social and Cultural Histories), by Sujit

Nineteenth-century historians have described how science became secular and how scientific theories such as evolution justified colonialism. This book changes this narrative by offering the first account of the relationship between nineteenth-century science and Christianity outside the Western world. At focus are the intrepid missionaries of the London Missionary Society who reverently surveyed the oceans and islands of the Pacific and instructed converts to observe nature in order to interpret God's designs. Sujit Sivasundaram argues that the knowledge that these missionaries practiced functioned as a popular science that was inextricably linked with religious expansion.

Review
"Sivasundaram makes a compelling argument for science as a key plank of evangelical ideology and for missionary natural history as an important form of nineteenth-century knowledge: one that cannot be reduced to merely religion, science or colonialism, but which forms an interlocking modality of colonial knowledge that established a highly influential non-elite science."
-Anna Jonston, University of Tasmania, Victorian Studies

"Sivasundaram tellingly illustrates the missionaries' complex discursive engagement with the Pacific and its mediation through intersecting ideas of religion, civilization, and science...Nature and the Godly Empire offers rich insights into missionary discourse and the metaphorical deployment of nature in an extra-Europe context."
-David Arnold, University of Warwick, Journal of Modern History

"This book explores the interconnections between science, evangelical missions, and empire during the first half of the nineteenth century....The book contributes to a growing body of scholarship challenging the notion that secularization constitutes the Big Story of science during the nineteenth century....The book will force historians to question sharp modern distinctions between science and religion, the spiritual and the material, evangelicalism and Enlightenment, colonies and metropis, tradition and modernity, if they want to understand missionary and indigenous cultures..."
--John Stenhouse, University of Otago, The International History Review

"...an ambitious, ingenious, erudite, and well-written attempt to explain the scientific role of Christian missions featuring the work of the London Missionary Society (LMS) in the southeast Pacific." -Neil Gunson, Journal of World History

'Colonial knowledge has assumed an increasingly important position in scholarship on British empire building in the Pacific. Sujit Sivasundaram's Nature and the Godly Empire is a key contribution to this developing line of enquiry. This richly textured monograph examines the connections between scientific knowledge and practice and the work of the London Missionary Society (LMS) in Polynesia. Sivasundaram convincingly argues that the understandings of the natural world that missionaries brought to the Pacific were central to the ideology of the mission." -The Historical Journal

'Nature and Godly Empire is a very interesting study of one of the key motors of Victorian culture and society, and its best sections sparkle with original analysis. It is precise and informative - the section about the LMS museum in London and the society's collecting culture is terrific - and it makes an important contribution to scholarship in the field." -Victorian Studies

'Sivasundaram's book is a mine of new or off-the-beaten track information... It would appear to be essential reading for the historian of Christian expansion...for the missiologist reflecting on the cross-cultural communication of the Gospel; and to be sure, for any student of British Christianity in the early nineteenth century." -Journal of Ecclesiastical History

Case presentation format made it feel real from the get go. Covered most of what one might see in a typical practice. Good overview. If you want depth, this may at least wet your appetite to dig deeper.

I enjoyed it. I've purchased three other on line neuro anesthesia books ( thank you 3k / yr ed allowance!) and this one was the quickest read. Bravo.

The Lure of the Arena: Social Psychology and the Crowd at the Roman Games, by Garrett G. Fagan

Why did the Romans turn out in their tens of thousands to watch brutal gladiatorial games? Previous studies have tried to explain the attraction of the arena by theorizing about its cultural function in Roman society. The games have been seen as celebrations of the violence of empire or of Rome's martial heritage, or as manifestations of the emperor's power. The desire to watch has therefore been limited to the Roman context and rendered alien to modern sensibilities. Yet the historical record reveals that people living in quite different times and circumstances (including our own) have regularly come out in large numbers to watch public rituals of violence such as executions, floggings, animal-baiting, cudgeling, pugilism and so on. Appreciating the social-psychological dynamics at work in attracting people to watch such events not only deepens our understanding of the spectator at the Roman games but also suggests something important about ourselves.

Channeling Ancient Rome
By Dr A
Confession first: I became a huge fan of Prof. Fagan (whom I never met) after listening to his courses on Roman history for the Teaching Company. I also read (and reviewed on amazon) his quirky book Bathing in Public in the Roman World.

The Lure of the Arena brings the bloody sights and wild sounds of the Roman arena into the peaceful corner of the modern world in which you happen to read this book. A typical arena performance began with the killing of wild animals in the morning, slowed down for public executions around lunch time, then went into high gear with gladiatorial fights in the afternoon. Prof. Fagan quotes historical sources to illustrate all three stages and the crowd's reaction to them.

Were Romans alone in finding the sight of people and animals tormented and killed so appealing? From well before the Roman times, through public executions in medieval and not so medieval Europe, up to our modern Ultimate Fighting, people across millennia and cultures have been drawn to public displays of violence. Still, no society has made a public spectacle out of violence as Rome did. Why?

Professor Fagan suggests four reasons: slavery conditioned Romans to see certain classes of people as wholly expendable; the Roman world was awash with brutality, violence, and degradation of the weak and powerless; Rome's dehumanizing focus on hierarchy and status; pain and death were omnipresent, with life expectancy of about 25 years. He masterfully weaves historic sources with the results of modern experimental psychology to make the experience of the arena almost palpable - he channels ancient Rome for us, while explaining it at the same time.

This book helped cure me of a certain romantization of Rome. I used to think that there was this wonderfully civilized society where a person could travel from Britain to North Africa without fear, which was destroyed by invaders and from within and leaving in its wake forests full of beasts, illiteracy, savages, and isolated villages hunkered down for the Dark Ages. Now, reading about mass murder of Christians and Jews in the arena, it becomes clear why there were people who welcomed the fall of Rome.

Garrett Fagan thoroughly documents his historical observations
By Zimri-Lim1761
Because of the Teaching Company Courses which I have taken from Garrett Fagan I am a big fan of his. When I heard he was coming to Knoxville to present a lecture on "The Lure of the Arena" I purchased the book. He has made me aware of the necessity of thorough researching and documentation of any historical subject. In fact many pages are highly footnoted and the bibliography is roughly thirty-two pages long. Even though the subject is essentially one of violence and cruelty I enjoyed his lecture and I also appreciated the written text. Like it or not there are similarities between the Romans and ourselves when it comes to spectator sports.

Loved It
By Jerome S.
I don't really want to write a long review, but just suffice it to say that this book was truly a blessing. What do I mean? It approaches the issue of Roman blood spectacles from an academic perspective that educates the reader on the sociological explanations of the appeal of violence to the public, but it does this in a way that is so intriguing that it actually increased my interest in Ancient Roman spectacles and Ancient Rome in general. And in that sense it was a blessing.

Reproductive Donation: Practice, Policy and BioethicsFrom Cambridge University Press

Reproductive donation is the most contentious area of assisted reproduction. Even within Europe there are wide variations in what is permitted in each country. This multi-disciplinary book takes a fresh look at the practices of egg, sperm and embryo donation and surrogacy, bringing together ethical analysis and empirical research. New evidence is offered on aspects of assisted reproduction and the families these create, including non-traditional types. One of the key issues addressed is should children be told of their donor origin? If they do learn the identity of their donor, what kinds of relationships may be forged between families, the donor and other donor sibling families? Should donation involve a gift relationship? Is intra-familial donation too close for comfort? How should we understand the growing trend for 'reproductive tourism'? This lively and informed discussion offers new insights into reproductive donation and the resulting donor families.

Review
"... the book is well laid out, exploring the topics with sufficient detail and depth for an interested lay reader. Despite the many contributors, the tone is consistently engaging and straightforward, with each chapter neatly presenting the various perspectives and arguments for its selected topic ... a valuable contribution in presenting from a variety of perspectives the many issues posed by reproductive donation."
Jiin-Yu Chen, Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine

"... the volume provides a rich and comprehensive collection of views on one of the most controversial areas of reproductive technologies, and offers new insights into reproductive donation."
Medicine, Healthcare and Philosophy

"... a fantastic policy textbook that will hopefully make its way to the shelves of campaigners and decision makers alike. It is also great reading for anyone interested in evidence-based approaches to donor conception, and a helpful aid for those considering involvement in reproductive donation as parent, donor or surrogate. Too much information out there is supplied by people with well-hidden agendas, and a book like this can be a powerful tool for negotiating the complex dilemmas parents and donors can face."
Ëlo Luik, BioNews

Review
"By providing an extensive foundation for real-time and embedded systems programming, this book serves a much-needed role for both students and professional alike. Students will benefit from the clarity of the text and the many straight-forward examples. Professional developers will benefit from the breadth of material showing how to harness multi-core and multi-processor platforms effectively, with a mainstream, industrial-strength concurrent programming language. The accessibility and readability provided by the Ada language make it ideal for such a book, even for those not using Ada at present. As the owner of more than forty books on Ada and many years of embedded/real-time systems development, I am happy to recommend this one and look forward to its publication."
Patrick Rogers, AdaCore

"This book by McCormick, Singhoff, and Hugues succeeds in introducing a very complicated and wide-ranging topic. It is well written and has extensive examples that are readily accessible but nonetheless reflect the complexities of the real world. I highly recommend the book."
Ada Letters

"This is a most rewarding book to read and absorb. I strongly recommend it."
George Hacken, Computing Reviews

"The book and supporting website are an impressive body of work by the authors... I recommend this excellent book to anyone with a technical interest in real-time, parallel, and embedded programming."
Howard Ausden, ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes

"The book is very well-written... Building Parallel, Embedded, and Real-Time Applications with Ada is one of those volumes that makes you think, especially about the hard problems (like real-time, multitasking and multicore) facing the firmware world today. I recommend it."
Jack G. Ganssle

Quick course for engineers
By a reader
I read through this book quickly and it seemed to be quite good, but the potential buyer should be aware of its limited aims. It does not attempt to cover the wide range of Ada's capabilities. It aims to give engineering students just enough knowledge to implement a basic control system, so it ignores aspects of Ada that don't directly support that.

Bad Binding
By rbl100
While the text of the book is written well and at the right level for me, the book is a hardback that came unbound. I bought a 2nd copy. It's expensive and probably better off as a paperback. Chunks of pages shouldn't come out of a book.

Rethinking Housing Bubbles: The Role of Household and Bank Balance Sheets in Modeling Economic Cycles, by Steven D. Gjerstad, Professor Ve

Balance sheet crises, in which the prices of widely held and highly leveraged assets collapse, pose distinctive economic challenges. An understanding of their causes and consequences is only recently developing, and there is no agreement on effective policy responses. From backgrounds in experimental economics, Steven Gjerstad and Nobel laureate Vernon L. Smith examine events that led to and resulted from the recent U.S. housing bubble and collapse, as a case study in the formation and propagation of balance sheet crises. They then examine all previous downturns in the U.S. economy, including the Great Depression, and document substantive differences between the recurrent features of economic cycles and financial crises and the beliefs that public officials hold about them, especially within the Federal Reserve System. They conclude with an examination of similar events in other countries and assess alternative strategies to contain financial crises and to recover from them.

Review
"This book was a pleasure to read and is highly recommended to anyone interested in financial-economic crises. It offers many intuitive stories of potential causes of the crisis, particularly the pivotal role of the housing market with historical data from the Great Recession, the Great Depression, earlier US recessions and crises in other countries, all nicely illustrated by clear time series plots and graphs and backed up by tables. The book also offers stimulating ideas for behavioral agent-based modeling of the crisis supported by insights and data from laboratory experiments."
Cars Hommes, Journal of Economic Psychology

About the Author
Steven D. Gjerstad is a presidential Fellow at Chapman University in Orange, California. Vernon L. Smith was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2002 for his groundbreaking work in experimental economics. He has joint appointments in the Argyros School of Business and Economics and the School of Law at Chapman University, and he is part of a team that will create and run the new Economic Science Institute there. Insightful
By Roger Perry
The has been many books published on the Global (North Atlantic?) Financial Crises of 2008. Some are insightful. This is one of them.

Co-author Vernon Smith was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2002 for his work in experimental economics. The first strand of this book is to take the findings of Smith's work into price setting behaviour in goods (perishable) markets and asset (re-tradable) markets and apply it to the US housing bubble of the 2000s. The focus is not so much on the financial crises that began in late 2007, but the decline in house sales and subsequently construction that commenced in 2005.

The second strand of the book is a hypothesis if how the "business" cycle evolves, first analysing the Great Depression, and then all subsequent recessions in the US. In all cases bar one, the authors find the recessions were led by a down turn in house sales and construction, followed by a down turn in goods markets and subsequently business investment.

The third focus of the book is to return to the US housing boom of the 2000s and examine the causative factors. In this respect they substantially follow the analysis in Rajan (2010) Fault Lines.

Finally the authors consider a wide range of policy options that are designed to address the specific issues raised by their analysis. In this section they review other countries experiences and responses, including Sweden, Japan, and the South East Asian countries.

This book was published in May 2014, at about the same time as Mian and Sifi (2014) "House of Debt". The latter has attracted considerable attention and critical comment. Gjerstad and Smith seem to have been overlooked. I hope this is quickly remedied as their analysis deserves wider comment. It takes thinking on the business cycles and financial crises another step forward, and points to areas of future work. An excellent "tour de force".
