Almost impossible to comprehend the supreme genius and the mind of Joseph Needham. His concepts of biochemistry were far far ahead of his time: cellular organization. integrative levels, and other vast concepts. To learn Chinese in middle age, study it exhaustively and publish the definitive history of Chinese science. Think of it! His biology rules today. His philosophy and mysticism likewise. About the Author
Sudhakar Nair has taught aircraft structures for over 30 years at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is a Fellow of ASME, Associate Fellow of AIAA, Member of ASEE, Sigma Xi, as well as Tau Beta Pi. He has authored numerous articles on structural mechanics and applied mathematics and is the author of two previous textbooks Introduction to Continuum Mechanics and Advanced Topics in Applied Mathematics for Engineering and Physical Sciences. He was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Department Chair and Chair of the Faculty Council at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He received the Barnett award for the best teacher and a special commendation from the AIAA student chapter at IIT.

Inscrutable

This book might have an appropriate level of explanation for someone, but it sure doesn't for me. I was able to follow most of Chapter 1, which covers index notation, because I've used it in two previous classes. The rest of the book is proving to be entirely inscrutable. I'm sure it all makes sense to someone who is already well versed in the material, but if you're using this as a student who does not understand the material, then you may be in for a frustrating read. Chapter 4, on integral theorems (5 pages long), seems to begin by assuming you are experienced with manipulating vector and tensor integrals. I find myself constantly scratching my head wondering why a step was performed in a derivation, or how the author knows a stated relation to be true. The whole book is like this, from what I can tell. Even many of the problems given at the ends of chapters are unclear and require some guesswork to figure out what is being asked, and there are no answers given at the end of the book.

I can't imagine learning the basics of continuum mechanics from this bare-minimum-explanation book. If you have an excellent instructor and/or a support system of other knowledgeable students who can fill in the blanks, then this might be an acceptable reference. This is the only continuum mechanics book I've used.

My idea of an excellent math book is Greenberg's Advanced Engineering Mathematics, if that helps anyone put my review in perspective. I notice that Nair lists it as suggested reading for some chapters in his book, and for good reason.

It seems like a copy-paste from somewhere else

I have read 9 chapters of the total 14 in this book until now, and I have to say that I really dislike it.

First of all, this book is terrible written, the author introduces concepts with no previous references at all or the mathematical development is not shown, it only mentions the name of the concept and final expression. Furthermore, he enumerates equations and they are never mentioned again, for example, when a calculation requires to recall those previous expressions (let say you are in chapter 8 and you need an expression of chapter 5), he only uses the expressions but never mentions where it came from, so you need to go back and search for it or learn the expression by memory. Also, when he is explaining concepts based of geometrical representations, the book shines for its absence of figures and when they are available they are wrong represented, so for example, a Point P is mentioned in the text but in the figure it is not there. The figures seems like made with MS word.

These problems, above mentioned, are presented in every single chapter. Let me summarize you the content of each chapter (until chapter 9):

Chapter 1. Introduces the concept of continuum and it is like a preface in which explains the content of each chapter.
Chapter 2. Index notation and Cartesian tensors. It also includes the basic eigenvalue problem and the polar decomposition of a matrix, as well as other mathematical tools, such as summation convention.
Chapter 3. This chapter is bad. because the author introduces general tensors, which are not used again in the rest of the book (except in chapter 5 where they are briefly mentioned again). Lack of figures to explain covariant y contracovariant basis I had to go to other book in order to understand what he was trying to explain, and for nothing because they are not used in the rest of the book.
Chapter 4. Introduces Gauss theorem and Stokes theorem, and this is it. It is only like 5 pages.
Chapter 5. Deformation. Material and spatial descriptions are introduced among other concepts. Those familiar with kinematics will be fine in this chapter.
Chapter 6. Motion. He obtains the derivatives and integral of material coordinates. Spin and deformation rate are introduced.
Chapter 7. Introduces concept such as energy balance, conservation of mass and objectivity (and others). The problem with this chapter is that you should have been exposed to this concepts before, because it only shows you the final expression.
Chapter 8. It introduces the stress tensor. Lack of explanation is presented in how the Piola-Kirshoff stress tensors are obtained.
Chapter 9 . Introduces concepts of thermodynamics, such as first law and clausius-duhem inequality for irreversible processes. This chapter has the same issues, if you have been exposed to those concepts before you are going to be fine, otherwise you should search somewhere else.

I am starting chapter 10, which is about constitutive relations. The remaining chapters are: 11. hyperelastic materials,12. fluid dynamics, 13. viscoelasticity and 14. plasticity.

One more thing, the book is not long, it is like 200 pages and also it comes with problems for each chapter but the solutions are not given.

Concise and unifying

I have been lucky enough to hear this course from Prof. Nair and was able to gain his insights about the mechanics of continua. Now, as a teacher of the subject I felt very lucky to get my hands on this book, which is an extended version of his course notes. Being one of the toughest subjects to grasp, Prof. Nair's treatment helps engineering students connect and unify their previous knowledge from various field of mechanics with new ideas and concepts presented in this text.

About the Author
Leo Donner received his Ph.D. in Geophysical Sciences from the University of Chicago in 1983. His research focuses on atmospheric general circulation modeling, especially the treatment of clouds and convective processes. He has served as the science chair of the Global Atmospheric Model Development Team at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University and a co-chair of the Atmospheric Model Working Group for the Community Atmospheric Model at NCAR in Boulder, Colorado. These models are often regarded as the two leading atmospheric general circulation models for climate studies in the United States. Leo Donner is also a lecturer in the Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at Princeton University. He serves on the advisory board for the journal Tellus and has been an editor of the Journal of Climate.

Wayne Schubert received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from UCLA in 1973, and then went on to join the faculty of the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University, where he presently teaches graduate-level atmospheric dynamics. His research covers tropical meteorology, atmospheric dynamics and numerical weather prediction. Professor Schubert is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and has served as Co-Chief Editor of the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences and as the AMS Publications Commissioner. He presently serves as an Editor of the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems.

Richard Somerville is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Research Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. He received a PhD in Meteorology from New York University in 1966 and has been a Professor at Scripps since 1979. He is a theoretical meteorologist and an expert on climate change. He is a coordinating lead author of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Professor Somerville is a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Meteorological Society. He has received awards for his research from the American Meteorological Society and is the recipient of the 2015 Climate Communications Prize from the American Geophysical Union.

A wonderful history of climate modeling science written by climate scientists

This book contains some beautiful gems of writing about a field of research that has simultaneously emerged as the poster child of politicization, a subject of scorn by the observationalists in atmospheric and Earth system science, and an example of what science is capable of telling us about the future of the planet... whether we are ready to hear about it or not! I particularly enjoyed the essays by Fleming and by Randall. Reading their writing reminds me that scientists can be incredibly good writers. I found the essays by Senior et al. and Somerville to be a bit dry, but the material still fit in with the narrative Donner et al. constructed to develop this carefully crafted edited book.

I give you the end of a golden string

Everything E.P.Thompson wrote is worth reading -- there are few who combine scholarship with political passion in a way that doesn't mess up either of them. Witness Against the Beast is Thompson's bits-and-pieces descent into the thickets of the intellectual underworld of the 1780s-1790s, and his golden thread is the attempt to prove that Blake was a Muggletonian (or influenced thereby) -- Muggletonians being one of a number of surviving ranters, quakers, millennialists, etc. from the explosion of radical apocalypticism during the 17th century English Civil War period. His main bit of evidence (about Blake's mother) has now been disproved, but Thompson is cagier than to put all his eggs into a Muggletonian basket. His main point -- that Blake was part of a diverse, often wildly mad, scene that combined radicalism with spiritual antinomianism (Law is to be repudiated by Faith) -- stands. A good complement to this would be "Why Mrs. Blake Cried", about the sexual weirdness of other groupings to which Blake had some form of allegiance.

None of any of this would really matter if it weren't for the poetry. The chapter on "London" -- a close reading -- is worth the price of admission alone. It is one of the best readings of a Blake poem, period.

William Blake was so powerful in his use of the ideas which became part of religious tradition that it is difficult to understand how any motive could be more subversive than the condemnations that spring from people who derive satisfaction from imposing sanctions upon the world. For me, this is in the intellectual ball park Lenny Bruce played above and beyond in Thank YOU Mask Man.

Good coverage of Volney's influence on William Blake

Volney’s Ruins of Empires (Les Ruines, 1791) is a lost classic in Western Literature. Thomas Jefferson like the book so much he anonymously translated it into English. Jefferson believed the book’s central premise—Empires Rise If Government Allows Enlightened Self-Interest to Flourish—best described the Enlightenment-based principles upon which the United States was founded. Volney saw his book as a direct challenge to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Social Contract—if you refute the Social Contract, you refute the moral foundation of the big government social programs that exist in the world today.

However Jefferson also insisted on complete anonymity for his translation due to the book’s controversial religious content. In the last four chapters of the book (translated by Joel Barlow) Volney reviews the history of the world’s major religions and concludes with a call for all nations to adopt the principle of separation of church and state—only then, Volney writes, can our species achieve world peace. These last four chapters have a renewed resonance in the post-9/11 world.

The Jefferson/Barlow translation went through many reprints in the USA during the 19th & 20th centuries. The book was read by the likes of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman, but has fallen out of favor in recent decades. The Left does not like Volney because he refutes Rousseau. The Right does not like him because Volney constructs a universal system of morality without reference to God. But in a world beset by massive government deficits and resurgent religious conflict, Volney’s Ruins of Empires provides a roadmap for the future. In a word, Volney’s Ruins isn’t about Yesterday. It’s about Today. And Tomorrow.

FIVE GENERAL RULES TO PURCHASE A JEFFERSON-BARLOW TRANSLATION

(1) The first US edition of the translation by Thomas Jefferson and Joel Barlow was published by Dixon and Sickles of New York in 1828. (According to this rule, the commonly found editions published by James Lyon of Philadelphia, 1799, and by William Davies of New York, 1796, are NOT Jefferson-Barlow translations.)

(2) Beware of editions published in the UK: 99 percent are NOT the Jefferson-Barlow translation. If you see the word "survey" in the title, that is a clear indication the book was published in the UK and is NOT a Jefferson-Barlow translation. In general, it's best to look for US editions post-1828.

(3) If the title page includes the phrase "translated under the inspection of the author," this is the Jefferson-Barlow translation.

(4) The Acid Test: turn to the Invocation: the first sentence should read: "Hail solitary ruins, holy sepulchres and silent walls! you I invoke; to you I address my prayer!" This is the Jefferson-Barlow translation.

(5) If you still want confirmation, go to Gutenberg.org => Volney. There you will find a free electronic copy of the (unacknowledged) Jefferson-Barlow translation for your comparison.
