About the Author
Heide Schatten is a Professor at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Her publications include advanced imaging methods, cellular and molecular biology, cancer biology, reproductive biology, microbiology and space biology. The latter included collaborations with NASA scientists and experiments aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour to examine the effects of spaceflight on cytoskeletal organization during development. REB: A Good Modern Bible

The Revised English Bible is a 1989 revision of the big selling New English Bible. Whereas the New English Bible kept some archaic language, the REB revision is entirely in modern language. The REB is generally reliable too, the only whiff of religious bias coming in the translators' decision to drop the name "Jehovah" from the handful of places the NEB uses it in Exodus. It is also a shame that the fine illustrations some editions of the NEB used have not been carried over to the REB. The quality of the printed product is excellent though.

I love the REB translation as an alternate to the very popular NRSV. Faithful with a rendering of English that makes one see things differently, this translation is not as appreciated and widly known as it deserves to be!

A Noteworthy Binding of a Lesser Known Translation

The Revised English Bible is not one that many American churches, pastors, or writers use very often. At least not many that I know of. It is a revision of the New English Bible (NEB) used far more often in the United Kingdom than America.
What I discovered is that this is a fresh translation - very readable - that takes a moderately "functional equivalent" approach. This means it is closer to, say, the NLT or the NIV than it would be a more literal translation with a "formal equivalence" approach like the NASB or ESV. The former translation style attempts to get the thought expression converted into modern phraseology, the latter attempts to get the very words themselves literally converted from one language to the other.

As a preacher and teacher, I am always going to favor word-for-word translations over the so-called dynamic equivalents. For this reason, the REB is probably going to be sentenced to a lot of "shelf time" in my library. I simply don't use Bibles that have a looser style very often. Perhaps you will, though, so read on.

The translation does have this in its favor: it is approved by more than a dozen denominations of various stripes in the UK, and has some significant weight of scholarship behind it. If you read the works of John Stott, for instance, he refers to the REB often in his commentaries.

One area where this Bible excels is in the reading of the Psalms and other Hebrew poetry. I think it does a very good job here of conveying the authors' more non-prosaic expressions of faith and intercession. This Bible may serve as a good "alternate voice" for you to help open up passages that have become so well known to our ears that we miss the forest for the trees, as they say.

Let's be clear, I would not have bought this Bible for the Cambridge catalog list price of around $80. I wouldn't buy any imitation leather Bible for that price. If I am going to spend anywhere near one hundred dollars, I want leather, and a good leather at that!

The cover is a dark charcoal gray, pleasantly dark actually, such that you might think it black if you didn't already know better. It is boldly gold-stamped with "The Revised English Bible" center-set in the upper quadrant. A gorgeous Cambridge logo is dry stamped in the center of the cover. Personally, I love the dry stamp, but could go without the title on the front.

While the binding is sewn (score!) and the size is just perfect for my liking (double score!) this new friend struggles to stay open on its own (no soup for you!). The binding is just a little too tight to have that "melt in your hand" feel that you have come to expect from a Pitt Minion or other Cambridge Bible. The interior lining, a standard black leatherette Cambridge paste-down binding is what you would expect, expertly done. Overall, the aesthetics of touch and feel are pretty dreamy. The slipcase helps make the case for this acquisition as well.

Probably my biggest "meh" moment came when looking over the paper. It is labeled as FSC "mixed sources." Personally, I love to save the trees but am not a strong advocate of recycled paper in Bibles. Bibles deserve the best in my opinion. I don't think it feels overly thin at all, actually it's a pretty good opacity in my view, but a very slight textured "recycled" feel is present. Also, the paper is a tell-tale off white with a creamy hue.

The line-matching is fairly inconsistent in my book. Some sections are remarkably done. Others look like someone smacked the copier mid-function and upset the bypass feed. Since this Bible does not have any references or notes, the overall look is crisp and usable. Since I don't plan to do much study from this text, but will rather be consulting it as a "from-time-to-time" reference work, none of those faults are fatal.

This is a slender volume with a high price tag, packed with much analysis, and fine arguments. I suspect that only the most stalwart of Augustinians will be drawn to read it. Brian Stock's book is a study of Augustine's use of soliloquy, dialogue, and narrative. It is a thorough scholarly examination of Augustine's use of inner dialogue and how dialogue and narrative comprised an important part of Augustine's spiritual practice and theological development. The writing is technical and dense.

As one might expect, Stock begins his study with Augustine's time at Cassiciacum and the composition "Soliloquia." Many scholars brand "Soliloquia" as an early work influenced by Augustine's new found platonism. It is a somewhat unfair categorization usually casting his inner dialogue as an immature effort at theology. Stock is quick to dismiss this perspective and finds in the text Augustine's early efforts at spiritual exercise. Augustine is inspired and influenced by the classical tradition (Plotinus, Cicero, Vergil), but under the influence of his Christian conversion turns inner dialogue into interaction with the Divine and the act of writing into much more than thoughts put to page. Augustine's dialogues reveal an intimacy with Other, and the inner working of the human soul, as it moves in self expression from image to thought to word. Stock's analysis of this dynamic includes an outstanding examination of Augustinian epistemology and anthropology, explicating Augustine's thinking on Platonic forms, Divine Illumination, the Teacher, Trinitarian relations, senses both empirical and spiritual, and Augustine's "unmoved mover" of the soul, the human will. Other works are drawn into Stock's examination, both small and great, from "De Ordine" and "De Beata Vita" to "De Genesi ad Litteram" and "De Trinitate."

Stock's book also takes into account modern perspectives, introducing studies on history and narrative. Augustine's Image and Likeness theory is drawn together with providential design, supporting a didacticism of personal narrative and historical experience. This was largely new material for me, and I found the reading difficult and slow going. But those better read than I would probably appreciate his efforts to draw Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein, and Dilthey into his discussion. Descartes' "cogito" is also fashioned to Stock's analysis as he explores Augustine's development of the self and his understanding of self-existence. Other sources include Etienne Gilson, Paul Ricoeur, Gerard O'Daly, Philip Cary, and Simon Harrison.

Stock is also liberal with his use of Latin. My rudimentary understanding of the language was helpful in reading the text, but the footnotes are very often only in Latin and my meager skills usually foundered at the bottom of the page.

Highly recommended. Anyone with an interest in Augustine should include this book on their reading list.

The Prehistory of AIDS

This well written and fascinating book is a cogent attempt to reconstruct the process that generated the great HIV pandemic. The author is a Canadian infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist with considerable experience in HIV-related research, including a good deal of work in Africa. Based on a careful synthesis of research and his own archival investigations, Pepin presents a synthesis of molecular epidemiology, traditional epidemiology, and social history to explain the emergence of HIV.

Pepin begins with the generally accepted idea that HIV crossed from its chimpanzee ancestor in central Africa sometime in the early 20th century, very likely because of hunting of chimps for meat. This concept is supported by molecular phylogenetic reconstructions and the fact that the bush meat trade probably increased markedly in the relevant area of central Africa with greater demand for meat and greater availability of firearms. Pepin estimates the number of individuals affected in this way to be very small, perhaps as small as 1 - 2. These infections would have been a dead end without some amplifying mechanism, which Pepin suggests was the widespread use of parenteral treatments for several tropical diseases. In the first half of the 20th century, French and Belgian colonial governments pursued impressive public health campaigns to suppress Sleeping Sickness and other illnesses. Many of these campaigns involved indiscriminate use of parenteral treatments with reusable and inadequately sterilized needles and syringes, a fertile breeding ground of this type of viral infection. The result was an expanded pool of infected individuals in rural French and Belgian central Africa. Some of these individuals migrated to cities to serve as laborers or, in the case of many women, to participate in various forms of prostitution. In these environments, HIV began to circulate via sexual transmission, particularly in the linked cities of Brazzaville and Leopoldville-Kinshasa. The explosive growth of prostitution after Congolese independence in the latter particularly favored expansion of the infected pool. From these sources, HIV would disseminate throughout the world. Pepin provides an interesting analysis of the probable route for transmission from Congo to the western hemisphere via Haitians who worked in the Congo after independence.

Pepin supports this model with careful arguments and analysis of the existing data. His integration of the colonial medical experience and the complex social history of central Africa with the epidemiology of HIV is impressive. The emergence of the HIV pandemic is presented as the result of the interaction between interesting biological phenomena, a serial cross-species jump of viruses, and the enormous social changes resulting from European colonialism. A good part of his model is based on inference but all is plausible and the whole hangs together particularly well. Well written and illustrated, this is actually gripping reading.

Fascinating and highly readable

HIV began as an obscure, poorly transmissible chimpanzee virus that may have infected only one person in an isolated part of rural Africa in 1920. How did it turn into a global plague? Pepin's book is a thoroughly fascinating, highly readable, and exhaustively researched account of how colonial public health efforts in central Africa during the 1920's-1950's amplified the virus. Tens of thousands of people were injected (often repeatedly) with unsterilized syringes in an effort to wipe out tropical diseases such as sleeping sickness and yaws. Meanwhile, urbanization and widespread prostitution in central African cities caused the virus to explode into the population. Ironically, STD clinics treating prostitutes and their clients in Leopoldville, in the Belgian Congo, may have played a crucial role in spreading the virus in the early years of the epidemic. This book serves as a good sequel of sorts to Randy Shilts' "And The Band Played On", which was written when much about the origin of AIDS was still a mystery. It would also be interesting to read along with "King Leopold's Ghost", which tells the tragic story of colonialism in the Belgian Congo. AIDS, it appears, is one of those restless ghosts.

brilliant, complex and tragic

from an injured bush hunter (or cook) in about 1921, SIVcpz (chimpanzee SIV) makes the leap to humans to become HIV. it was a leap that likely happened on more than one occasion. however, this time the european colonial drive on equatorial Africa had created conditions for a "perfect storm." how this one case led to tens of millions is quite a story.

the colonials wanted to make tropical Africa safe for their civilizing mission. well, at least safe for europeans! this meant eradicating endemic diseases and resulted in inoculation after inoculation with syringes that were not sterilized. (who knew, huh?) additionally, the civil war in the [former Belgian] Congo after independence created such poverty and disruption in the capital Leopoldville as to create the perfect environment for sexual acceleration of the virus through a new [for Africa] kind of high-volume cash-based prostitution.

a single Haitian UN contract worker in the now independent Congo then brings the virus home. in itself, this simple act might not have lead to contagion in Haiti were it not for a shadowy international plasma trade that found perfect conditions to operate under the dark tyranny of 'Baby Doc' Duvalier. from a pool of impoverished and infected plasma donors the virus is again accelerated through the sex trade. the leap to North America is swift and efficient, with gay men and IV drug users the first bridgehead and blood products close behind.

an elegant hypothesis, nicely documented, thoughtfully stated. without finger-pointing or shame. just brilliant! a must read! thank you, Jacques Pepin.

About the Author
François Renaud is a Professor of Philosophy at the Université de Moncton (New Brunswick). He has published mostly on Plato, Platonic interpretation both in Antiquity and in modern times, and Plato's Socratic legacy. His major publications include Hermeneutic Philosophy and Plato: Gadamer's Response to the Philebus (2010) co-edited with Christopher Gill.

Harold Tarrant is Emeritus Professor at the University of Newcastle, Australia, where he was Professor of Classics for several years. He has authored or co-authored several books relating to ancient Platonism from Plato through to Olympiodorus, and has also co-edited several volumes, the latest being The Neoplatonic Socrates (2014) with Danielle A. Layne.

Dr Wolfgang Steinicke, FRAS, is a committee member of the Webb Deep Sky Society and Director of its Nebulae and Clusters section, a core team member of the international NGC/IC Project, Head of the History Section of the VdS, Germany's largest national association of amateur astronomers, and a member of the Working Group for the History of Astronomy of the Astronomische Gesellschaft. He frequently gives conference talks and courses, and contributes to astronomical magazines. This is his fourth book.
