James Ward (1843-1925) was a renowned philosopher and psychologist who criticised the objective principles of scientific naturalism. Believing in the primacy of the subject-object relationship for human experience, he rejected the detached perspective of the sciences; coming to the final conclusion that matter is fundamentally derived from mind, and mind is given coherence by the existence of God. This metaphysical belief was derived from his observations as a psychologist during the earlier part of his career, and his understanding that the subject cannot be reduced to a passive receiver of the objective world. This volume, which was originally published in 1911, was based upon the Gifford Lectures given during the years 1907-10. It constitutes a further development of Ward's beliefs into the form of a complete system, and it remains of value to anyone with an interest in philosophy, psychology or phenomenology.

About the Author
Clare A. Lees is Professor of Medieval Literature and History of the Language at King's College London, where she currently directs the Centre for Late Antique and Medieval Studies. She is known for her work on the earliest English literature, gender and the history of women's writing, religious writing and cultural studies, including issues of place and landscape, relations between textual and material culture, and re-workings of Anglo-Saxon literature by writers of modern, contemporary literature. She is the editor of Medieval Masculinities: Regarding Men in the Middle Ages (1994) and co-editor of Gender in Debate from the Early Middle Ages to the Renaissance (with Thelma Fenster, 2002) and A Place to Believe in: Locating Medieval Landscapes (with Gillian R. Overing, 2006). She is the author of Tradition and Belief: Religious Writing in Late Anglo-Saxon England (1999) and co-author of Double Agents: Women and Clerical Culture in Anglo-Saxon England (with Gillian R. A CLASSIC ESSAY

I disagree with most critic reviews of Searle's book. My prefered analytical philosophers in America are Searle and Kripke. The difference is that Kripke is academically hipervaluated while Searle is academically underrated. Easy to explain, since the ideal language philosophy has won the race in the academy, while Searle, comming from the philosophy of ordinary language, belongs to the few (if not the only) remanescents of the old orthodoxy. Moreover, he is very critical against the brilliant absurdities so easy to find in the present philosophy of language, what surelly isn't flattering for the academic millieu. About the way he writtes I found it extremely clear and even funny, though academically prophane, remembering Popper. The book is densely written and brings originality in nearly each page. His criticism of Kripke's and Putnam's theories, though not decisive, shows that the new orthodoxy in philosophy of language has at least as many flaws as the old orthodoxy to which he himself belongs. The deep insight that sustains the book is the idea that the speech act theory reflects the structure of intentionality. Any intentional act must have the form M(p) (M = intentional mode) in the same way as any speech act must have the form F(p) (F = ilocutionary force). Philosophically this is the best of Searle's books.

Excellent Modern Theory of Mind

P>In his usual manner, Searle tackles the problem of consciousness and how the mind works in this thorough examination of both classical and contemporary concerns. It's an exceedingly masterful task that is richly rewarding, if only slightly frustrating because of his poor syntactical structures.
Analytic philosophy is often difficult enough, and this book is of average difficulty, but when an author does not write clearly with near-run-on sentences, myandering and labyrinthine syntax, and in less than necessary obtuseness, it is a drawback. This is my only complaint.
Part of the problem is the author's, part reader's. Searle is going against the analytic grain by expositing a theory of mind that is at once novel and distinctive, clearing up confusions and ambiguities along the way. But these new ideas and the direction of fit they present are exciting and facinating, even if the presentation is less than perfect.
It's hard to imagine modern-day analytic philosophers going out on a limb with actual theory (they tend toward the criticism of others), so that it is refreshing that someone of Mr. Searle's reputation and caliber takes a stab at presenting a coherent theory of mind in new dress and ambiance: Naive realism.
This isn't the first book of Searle's I'd recommend. That honor goes to "Mind, Language, and Society," his short, but densely argued, and clearer exposition, of several ideas (some of which he adumbrates from this volume). If you like what you read in THAT book, this book will further delight you.
What's so agreeable about Searle, if not his syntax, is his willingness to posit a coherent theory of mind in the traditional vein but in entirely new clothing. It's refreshing to see a modern philosopher actually doing philosophy, not critiquing the philosophy of others. Searle would probably have advanced his cause by having someone else tidy up his presentation, as this drawback reduces the splendor of the overall book.

THE THIRD PART OF A “TRILOGY” BY THE FAMED ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHER

John Rogers Searle (born 1932) is an American philosopher at UC Berkeley. He has written many other books, such as The Rediscovery of the Mind, The Mystery of Consciousness, Expression and Meaning, Speech Acts, Mind: A Brief Introduction, Mind, Language And Society, The Construction of Social Reality, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1983 book, “The primary aim of this book is to develop a theory of intentionality. I hesitate to call it a general theory because a large number of topics, e.g., the emotions, are left undiscussed, but I do believe the approach here presented will prove useful for explaining Intentional phenomena generally. This book is the third in a series of related studies of mind and language. One of its objectives is to provide a foundation for my two earlier books, ‘Speech Acts’ … and ‘Expression and Meaning.’”

In the first chapter, he states, “I am really making two claims here, and they need to be distinguished. In am claiming first that Intentional states are in general parts of Networks of Intentional states and only have their conditions of satisfaction relative to their position in the Network. Versions of this view, generally called ‘holism,’ are quite common in contemporary philosophy; indeed a certain effortless holism is something of a current philosophical orthodoxy. But I am also making a second, much more controversial claim: in addition to the Network of representations, there is also a background of nonrepresentational mental capacities; and, in general, representations only function they only have the conditions of satisfaction that they do, against this nonrepresentational Background.” (Pg. 20-21)

He summarizes, “I want to argue that the traditional sense data theorists were correct in recognizing that we have experiences, visual and otherwise, but they mislocated the Intentionality of perception in supposing that experiences were the objects of perception, and the naïve realists were correct in recognizing that material objects and events are characteristically the objects of perception, but many of them failed to realize that the material object can only be the object of visual perception because the perception has an Intentional content, and the vehicle of the Intentional content is a visual experience.” (Pg. 60-61)

He explains in chapter 3, “We are not trying to show that Intentionality is really something else, but rather to explain it in terms of a family of notions each of which is explained independently, usually by way of examples. To repeat: these is no nonintentional standpoint from which we can survey the relations between Intentional states and their conditions of satisfaction. Any analysis must take place from within the circle of Intentional concepts.” (Pg. 79)

He argues, “I am rejecting both accounts of experience. Both accounts fail to describe the Intentionality of our experiences of acting and perceiving. They both fail to account for the fact that the conditions of satisfaction are determined by the experience and that part of the conditions of satisfaction is that the experience is one of making its Intentional object happen or one of its Intentional object making it happen. For this reason we can experience causation, but we don’t have to have an a priori concept of cause to do it, any more than we have to have an a priori concept of red to experience redness.” (Pg. 132)

He notes, “But when it comes to examining the conditions of the possibility of the functioning of the mind, we simply have very little vocabulary to hand except the vocabulary of first-order Intentional states. There simply is no first-order for the Background, because the Background has no Intentionality. As the precondition of Intentionality, the Background is as invisible to Intentionality as the eye which sees is invisible to itself.” (Pg. 157)

He observes in the Epilogue, “My own approach to mental states and events has been totally realistic in the sense that I think there really are such things as intrinsic mental phenomena which cannot be reduced to something else or eliminated by some kind of re-definition. There really are pains, tickles, and itches, beliefs, fears, hopes, desires, perceptual experiences, experiences of acting, thoughts, feelings, and all the rest. Now you might think that such a claim was so obviously true as to be hardly worth making, but the amazing thing is that is it routinely denied, though usually in a disguised form, by many, perhaps most, of the advanced thinkers who write on these topics.” (Pg. 262)

He continues, “no one ever came to these views by a close scrutiny of the phenomena in question. No one ever considered his own terrible pain or his deepest worry and concluded that they were just Turing machine states or that they could be entirely defined in terms of their causes and effects or that attributing such states to themselves was just a matter of taking a certain stance toward themselves. Second, no one would think of treating other biological phenomena in this way.” (Pg. 263)

He concludes, “The picture that I have been suggesting, and the picture that I believe will eventually lead to a resolution of the dilemma, is one according to which mental states are both CAUSED by the operations of the brain and REALIZED IN the structure of the brain… Once the possibility of mental and physical phenomena standing in both these relations is understood we have removed at least one major obstacle to seeing how mental states which are caused by brain states can also cause further brain states and mental states.”

This book will be “must reading” for anyone seriously studying Searle’s thought, or the philosophy of mind in general.

Lawrence wrote the 763 letters in this volume in the last 15 months of his life. Most of the letters are previously unpublished; many more are available only in incomplete texts. A large number concern "business," and Lawrence's poor health noticeably saps his energy. The letters are also shadowed by Lawrence's growing awareness that he would die before reaching his 45th birthday. Still, the characteristic Lawrentian spirit is here in abundance. The letters are masterfully but unobtrusively edited by Sagar and Boulton, two English academics. It's fair to say that they know more about Lawrence's life than he knew himself. Volume 8 will mainly provide a comprehensive index to the over 5500 letters of the first seven volumes. This edition of Lawrence's letters will stand as a monument of modern literary scholarship; all research collections should own it.

About the Author
Anil V. Rao earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering and A.B. in mathematics from Cornell University, his M.S.E. in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University. After earning his Ph.D., Dr Rao joined The Aerospace Corporation in Los Angeles, California, where he was involved in mission support for U.S. Air Force launch vehicle programs and trajectory optimization software development. Subsequently, Dr Rao joined The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc., in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he has been involved in numerous projects related to trajectory optimization, guidance, and navigation of aerospace vehicles. Concurrently, for the past several years Dr Rao has been an Adjunct Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Boston University where he has taught the core undergraduate engineering dynamics course. Since joining BU, Dr Rao has been voted AIAA/ASME Faculty Member of the Year Award by the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department and has been voted Boston University College of Engineering Professor of the Year for outstanding teaching.

Excellent book for intro/intermediate dynamics class

Dr. Rao presents the subject of Dynamics to his reader in a very clear and concise manner. If you're an undergraduate taking dynamics for the first time, you're lucky that your professor is assigning this book - it's ten steps above Beer and Johnston. Rao's book is also well-suited for a graduate course. I enrolled in his grad class at UF last semester and quickly realized that my undergrad dynamics coursework (based on Beer & Johnston) was not the correct way to learn the subject. This book helped me master the fundamentals so that by the end of the semester I was much more confident in my ability to analyze dynamical systems.

Disappointingly little information

It's hard to decide whether to recommend this book. On the one hand, it's poorly organized and contains disappointingly little information about each language or family. On the other, where else is one going to find much of any information in English on these languages?

Having already read Marianne Mithun's book The Languages of Native North America, of this same Cambridge series, I was very disappointed at how very far The Meso-American Indian Languages fell short of the standards that she had set.

Among the problems I found with this book:
1. There were no seperate sections to introduce individual language families.
2. few maps and charts: I wanted to know specifically which communities each language or dialect was spoken in, and precisely where each of these could be found, but the few maps showed so little detail that only general areas could be discerned.
3. Where sample sentences were given to illustrate grammatical points, it was often difficult to know which language the sample was from without looking far above in the preceding text. Where examples from various languages are used in a given section, each sample sentence should be labelled as to contributing language.
4. For most language families, little or no effort was made (a) to enumerate and identify individual speech communities within low-level groupings, or (b) to differentiate independant languages from mutually intelligible dailects.
5. For information on status, population and literacy rates for each language, the reader would be better off looking to SIL's Ethnologue website.
6. After reading this book, I still know practically nothing about research done on each language or the researchers involved. There are extensive bibliographies, however, so that the determined student can find much of this information with effort. Nor was there much information about literature in these languages, such as newspapers or religious literature.
7. Every native English speaker knows intuitively that the sentence "It is me who is well" is grammatically correct (where "me" is in oblique form because it is the object of the verb "is", and "is" in the second phrase is properly 3rd person singular because its subject is "who"), but we are brainwashed through formal education to accept such unthinking silliness as "It is I who is well. Mr. Suarez takes this regrammaticalization to its absurd extreme with "It is I who am well." Most contemplative speakers of English (which excludes most high school English teachers and several influential grammarians) would immediately recognize the idiocy of this kind of syntactic contortionism, but Mr. Suarez employs it throughout this volume.

The good things that I can say about this book are:
1. One gains an understanding of Meso-America as a linguistic area through the phonological and syntactic comparisons the author makes.
2. Chapter 9 gives a good overview of "Preconquest Literary Traditions", the literature of Classical Nauatl and Mayan before and shortly after the conquest.
3. Chapter 10 covers "The prehistory of Mesoamerican Indian languages", correlating archeological and linguistic data, and discussing direction of loanwords as indicative of cultural influence.
4. Chapter 11 "Indian languages after the conquest": language policies and current status of the languages

Basically, chapters 3 through 8 should be completely rewritten by Marianne Mithun.

A very easy-to-read book, but far too shallow

As a student of linguistics, the native languages of Mesoamerica are an area that naturally is of considerable interest to me, so that it was only natural I should buy "The Mesoamerican Indian Languages" after having been very impressed by the related The Languages of the Andes.

However, as Scott Kegley points out, "The Mesoamerican Indian Languages" is rather disappointing for its lack of depth. There is little coverage of what makes these languages interesting. As an example, the ergativity of the Mayan and Huave languages is only mentioned once with no examples, yet it is a critical aspect of their structure - so critically so that in some Huave languages which appear to have the same word order as English in transitive clauses actually have the verb before the subject in intransitive ones (word order of ergative-verb-absolutive). Although there is a reasonable description of how the word is structured in such languages as Tarascan, it is far from so totally comprehensive as one would wish. Still, one does get a very good feel for how these languages compare in their morphological structures with each other.

Too much of the focus of "The Mesoamerican Indian Languages" is on subjects that should have been peripheral such as phonology, the status of these languages today, and the influence of Spanish on the vocabulary and even grammar. On the other hand, I can feel very satisfied with the descriptions of these questions - most especially the phonology, which is done in a manner one would wish for with the rest of "The Mesoamerican Indian Languages". This is true of both the actual phonological systems and the quite complex tone systems which are a feature of the largest language family indigenous to the area - the Oto-Manguean languages.

All in all, this is a rather disappointing book that could have used far more examples in grammar and less focus on peripheral points. In the absence of any other book covering this rich and unusual linguistic area in detail, "The Mesoamerican Indian Languages" has to serve as a reference guide for a beginner in Mesoamerican linguistics, but it could be much better: one can for instance get as much information on certain topics from Johanna Nichols' superb Linguistic Diversity in Space and Time.

Good overview of standard theory and more modern developments

Condensed matter physics has been and will always be the most important branch of physics, due mostly to its role in technological developments. Advances in medicine have also depended directly on advances in condensed matter physics, along with advances in materials science and computer technology. Armies of researchers and billions of research dollars have poured into this field, and throughout its history it has been marked by brilliant developments. Many of these developments are discussed in this book, which targets a readership that already has had exposure to condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics at the elementary level. Although somewhat short considering the subject matter, the author is still able to give the details on the subjects that have given the most surprises to researchers in recent decades.

For example, this book has one of the best overviews of the Kondo problem of all the current books on advanced condensed matter physics. The author presents the problem as one that will definitely need a treatment not possible in the context of mean-field theory, since the latter is mostly applicable to high temperatures. The goal is to study the affects of local magnetic moments on the transport and magnetic properties of a particular metal and how these moments behave as the temperature is lowered. Interestingly, and of great surprise when it was discovered, above the so-called Kondo temperature, the magnetic susceptibility of a magnetic impurity obeys the usual Curie law. However below the Kondo temperature it approaches a constant. Thus magnetism ceases at low temperatures, which definitely countered what was expected, namely that there is always magnetization below the Curie temperature. The analysis of the problem boils down to studying the interaction of the spin of the impurity with the conduction electrons, and the original solution by Kondo diverged at temperatures below the Kondo temperature. An approach based on the renormalization group (ala Kenneth Wilson) finally solved the Kondo problem, and this approach is discussed, along with the others that were proposed before it and based on second-order perturbation theory. These developments are discussed in the book.

The treatment of the electron gas, the Hartree-Fock approximation, and plasma oscillations is fairly standard but detailed. For the noninteracting electron gas the author actually calculates the pressure in the ground state and quotes the value: one million atmospheres (!) with this coming solely from the Pauli exclusion principle. In his discussion of the Wigner solid, the author mentions, but does not discuss in detail, the experiments in the dilute two-dimensional electron gas that indicate a metal-insulator transition in this system for zero magnetic field. A reference is given however for readers who want to familiarize themselves with what was known experimentally at the time of publication. Interest in the two-dimensional electron gas has waxed and waned over the last few decades. This reviewer studied this system in the context of metal-insulator-semiconductor structures with narrow gap semiconductors in the early 1980's.

Also discussed in the book, and of great interest to other areas of physics and mathematics such as the theory of exactly solved models in statistical mechanics and conformal field theory, is the topic of bosonization. The author motivates this subject by considering the case of the dynamics of the Fourier components of the electron density for the interacting electron gas in the regime where plasma oscillations exist. This dynamics is governed by a harmonic oscillator equation, which gives credence to the view that plasma oscillations can be viewed as bosonic excitations in the interacting electron gas. A natural question to ask then is whether this can be generalized, namely can one start with a system governed by Fermi-Dirac statistics and map it into one that is governed by Bose-Einstein statistics. A general procedure for doing this is unknown, but it has been done rigorously for the case of interacting electrons in one dimension. The author discusses this for the case of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, which when subjected to bosonization becomes the Luttinger liquid. He reminds the reader though that one must not impute too much to bosonization in this case since it is merely an equivalence of their equations of motion. He does note however that for the case of interacting electrons in one-dimension there is interesting physics that can be illuminated by the process of bosonization, namely that the electron in this case can be viewed as a composite particle consisting of a `holon' and a `spinon', both of which obey Bose statistics.

The most interesting part of the book, and one that is full of lively discussion, is the one on localization in disordered solids. At least for Anderson localization, which was the first considered historically, the dependence on dimension is obvious, with the Anderson transition only occurring in dimensions three or more. The absence of the transition in dimensions less than three is perhaps not too surprising if one remembers the results in rigorous statistical quantum physics about the absence of phase transitions in dimensions this low. But here one is studying the occurrence of a transition between insulating and conducting regimes, which is dependent on the degree of disorder, and not the temperature (the insulator-metal transition is thus a `quantum phase transition'). It is clear from the perusal of this chapter that localization is a difficult problem whose study requires many tools, each one of these by itself insufficient to capture the entire phenomenon. Indeed, the Boltzmann transport theory cannot describe the Anderson transition, due to its insistence that the mean free path be greater than the lattice spacing. If one uses Green functions, one must compute the site self-energy, which as the author shows (but briefly) can be done but it masks the essential physics of the localization transition. Thus the author resorts to scaling theory, which via a single parameter, the conductance, completely characterizes the localization transition.

After the book of A/M solid state physics, there is no consensus on the most suitable and modern solid state physics textbook. One of the main reason is the rapid developements of some fancy theory, like bosonization, RG, etc after 70s. This book written by Phillips convers almost

all the contemporary topics in condensed matter theory except the high-Tc part. On this ground, this book is worthy recommendation.
