About the Author
Lorna J. Gibson is the Matoula S. Salapatas Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she has been a faculty member since 1984. Her research interests focus on the mechanics of materials with a cellular structure such as honeycombs and foams and she is co-author, with Mike Ashby, of Cellular Solids: Structure and Properties (2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 1997).

Michael F. Ashby is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, where he has been a faculty member since 1973. He is a member of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He has authored a number of books on materials, design and the environment and he has a lifelong interest in natural and cellular materials.

Brendan A. Harley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as a core faculty member of the Institute for Genomic Biology (Regenerative Biology and Tissue Engineering Theme). His research interests focus on fabricating homogenous and spatially-patterned cellular biomaterials for tissue engineering applications.

An excellent book for learning the basics of neutron scattering, which in the process teaches much about modern methods of quantum theory applied to condensed matter. Squires provides the simplest and most concise treatment of this material I have ever seen.

About the Author
David M. John is Adjunct Professor at the Martin Ryan Institute, National University of Ireland, Galway and Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum in London. His main research interests are in the taxonomy, ecology and biogeography of freshwater and tropical marine algae.

Brian A. Whitton is Emeritus Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Durham. He is currently studying probable increases in organic phosphate in upland streams and rivers and its impact on algae, as well as being involved in providing training on algal identification for water management organisations.

Alan J. Brook is Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Buckingham. He has held a number of positions at institutions in the UK, Sudan and the USA, and has spent his research career studying freshwater algae, with particular interest in desmids.

Comprehensive and Scholarly Review of Medieval Japan

This is an outstanding work and provides both the lay reader and the scholar with a comprehensive discussion of Medieval Japan with all its complexities, richness, and fascinating detail. Understanding Japanese history is a challenge and this work provides an excellent and detailed background of the feudal period.

Great scholarship, dull reading

This volume is the third installment of a set of six Cambridge Histories of Japan. It is centered on 'Medieval Japan', which in Japanese History usually applies to the period between 1185 and 1568, covering the Kamakura, Nambokucho and Muromachi periods. In this age the Imperial Court loses ground and power, and the military government of the Shoguns is established. In society, Buddhism takes a greater stranglehold on the mentalities and beliefs, and new sects arrise (Jodo, Jodo Shin, Zen, Nichiren). Central authority is progressively weakened, and a socio-economic order vagely similar to western Feudalism appears, with a strong decentralization of political power (especially for the last century or so, when daimyos rule the land with almost complete autonomy).

Now, centering on the volume: it contains all the good and bad things of the Cambridge Histories. The good ones are the superb scholarship, made by specialists on the field and touching its subjects with depth and technical expertise. But that virtue is also the greatest setback. Don't expect a clear-cut, linear, mainly political history of Medieval Japan in this volume. On the contrary, you get a set of independent and hardly related monographs which are very vaguely ordered bearing in mind chronological order and subject-matter (first the ones on political history and economy; then the ones about foreign relations, culture and religion).

If what you're looking for is an extensive an coherent historical account of Medieval Japan, and/or you're a begginer to the subject, this book isn't for you. Now, if you already have a clear scheme of the main reigns, battles, events... in your head, and you want to deepen (or even subvert) the conventional truths and explanations, the book will come handy; bear in mind that even its 'political' monographs take for granted you are acquainted with events like Jokyu no ran or the Gempei wars and don't bother to narrate much.

That being said, all monographs are high quality, but can make very dull reading (especially if, for example, you aren't too interested in different types of land tenure or taxes). Best way to use the Histories is to navigate to the monographs that interest you. In this volume, I liked very much the one by Barbara Ruch, which tried to dispell topics and stereotypes about 'Japanese Medieval Culture'.

That's about it. I give it 4 stars. The scholarship deserves more, but it is only of real use to specialists, and the occasional dullness and lack of general historial narration would take it down rather fast. 4 is the middle ground, although I feel it might be too positive for the expectations I had when I got the book.

Thus far, historians have concentrated on the victorious caudilloled armies of the north, which was the birthplace of the Revolution, or on the popular social movements of central Mexico, most notably Zapatismo, the agrarian movements of Veracruz and Michoacan, and the more widespread Cristero rebellion. In bypassing southeastern Mexico, modern writers seem to have concurred with the assessment of some contemporary observers that, in the remote Yucatan peninsula, the Revolution followed a strange and exceptional course. Professor Joseph shows that in certain respects, Yucatan's revolutionary experience was indeed unique. It was later to arrive, less violent, and probably more radical in its first decade than it was elsewhere in the republic. Although Yucatan was not important in the genesis and early development of the Revolution, it became a celebrated social laboratory, first for bourgeois reform under Constitutionalist general Salvador Alvarado, and later for 'socialist' experiment under civilian governor Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Professor Joseph argues that the Yucatecan case has important implications for understanding such central problems as export dependency and regional development, agrarian reform, mass mobilization and caciquismo (bossism), and the relationship between revolutionary ideology and practice.
