Radicals in Their Own Time explores the lives of five Americans, with lifetimes spanning four hundred years, who agitated for greater freedom in America. Every generation has them: individuals who speak truth to power and crave freedom from arbitrary authority. This book makes two important observations in discussing Roger Williams, Thomas Paine, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Vine Deloria, Jr. First, each believed that government must broadly tolerate individual autonomy. Second, each argued that religious orthodoxy has been a major source of society's ills - and all endured serious negative repercussions for doing so. The book challenges Christian orthodoxy and argues that part of what makes these five figures compelling is their willingness to pay the price for their convictions - much to the lasting benefit of liberty and equal justice in America.

The Cultural Resistance to Sound Principles
By Carolyn Turnbull
Cultural arguments promoting individual equality, freedom and religious tolerance are never won or lost in their own time. One side of the argument ages and a new generation defines the terms of engagement anew. Nonetheless, the possibility of cross-generational progress on such arguments depends on brave souls risking uncomfortable lives to push ideals they know are persuasive in the fullness of time, but not ready for acceptance by their friends and neighbors. These souls are visionaries more than leaders, as leaders must promise comfort and prosperity to their followers while these visionaries offer lives of scorn, isolation, and exile to those courageous enough to follow them. Yet because the principles they hold out for are so compelling on future generations, we are likely to remember their ideas more than their lives, their names, or the sacrifices they made to live as radicals in their own time. In Radicals in Their Own Time: Four Hundred Years of Struggle for Liberty and Equal Justice in America, Michael Anthony Lawrence goes far to correct this imbalance. In a lucid and highly accessible prose style, Lawrence paints compelling portraits of Roger Williams, Thomas Paine, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, W.E.B. BuBois, and Vine Deloria, Jr. While each radical lived in different times and stood up for different issues, they all risked everything to promote the American ideals of tolerance, equality, and social justice. Readers who have heard about one or another of these radicals will still find much new in these pages. While John Locke was considered an intellectual mentor of Thomas Jefferson, these pages reveal how Roger Wiliams was likely an intellectual mentor of John Locke, how Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the intellectual founder of the American feminist movement, was ultimately abandoned by feminists as too doctrinaire, and how W.E.B. Dubois died in exile on the very day Martin Luther King delivered his immortal "I have a dream" speech They will also learn how all these radicals used their own personal religious values to fend off the conventional religious practices of the day. Readers who have never heard of these radicals will be treated to a highly engaging civics lesson on four hundred years of American ideals and America's ongoing struggle to live up to them. This is a great and timely book, which I highly recommend.

Radicals and the Strugle for Equal Justice
By Michael Bonislawski
In this book M. A. Lawerence takes the lives of five radicals and reviews their actions in the context of the appropriate times and chronicles how they responded to the injustices by challenging the status quo. I found his description lively and compelling. The five radicals described in the narrative cover 1603-2005 showing how each time period produced each radical.
