Jack Tar's Story examines the autobiographies and memoirs of antebellum American sailors to explore contested meanings of manhood and nationalism in the early republic. It is the first study to use various kinds of institutional sources, including crew lists, ships' logs, impressment records, to document the stories sailors told. It focuses on how mariner authors remembered/interpreted various events and experiences, including the War of 1812, the Haitian Revolution, South America's wars of independence, British impressment, flogging on the high seas, roistering, and religious conversion. This book straddles different fields of scholarship and suggests how their concerns intersect or resonate with each other: the history of print culture, the study of autobiographical writing, and the historiography of seafaring life and of masculinity in antebellum America.

About the Author
Myra C. Glenn is Professor of American History at Elmira College. She is the author of Campaigns against Corporal Punishment: Prisoners, Sailors, Women, and Children in Antebellum America and Thomas K. Beecher: Minister to a Changing America, 1824-1900. Her work has appeared in numerous professional journals, and she is the recipient of two Fulbright lecture awards.

Fascinating (if brief) survey of antebellum sea stories

This short book is both a survey of antebellum sailors' narratives, as well as exhortation for scholars to view these tales with more skepticism.
Professor Glenn does a good job covering the usual suspects--like Samuel Leech, Richard Dana--as well as the more obscure. That she verifies (or reports when she is unable to verify) her subjects' sea service with government records is delightful (what can I say except that I'm a lawyer--trust but verify). Footnotes indicate she's very well versed in the secondary sources.
She's also quite kind and genteel: when she calls out various historians for mistakes or sloppiness, it's subtle enough that you might miss it. Or literary critics; there's the suggestion literary critics of the memoir genre as too credulous (but does it go without saying that these are sea stories?).
It's a cheap complaint to say the book is too short...but it is. I'd be miserable without IRAC in legal writing, but in 177 pages, there are too many words used for what will be said and when, while more elegant writing would have taken this space to relay stories and arguments in greater depth.
But even in such a small space, there is repetition. I may have the attention span of a gnat these days (squirrel!), but I do remember what Samuel Leech wrote about flogging from one chapter to the next. Although Melville's White Jacket is fiction, I was surprised it was given so little attention, and then very late in the text. The footnotes demonstrate that most of the military naval history comes from the usual suspects, but there are some gems (like dissertations) that I look forward to hunting for in the future.
Really a delightful, fast read.

research plan leads to enlightenment

I bought this book to help in my research covering the life of Samuel F Holbrook, a family ancestor. The plan was to skim and mostly take advantage of the thorough research and footnotes provided by author Myra Glenn. I wound up reading the whole thing in depth. This book is particularly revealing in the evolution of masculinity and its manifestations from colonial times to the present. I found it very enlightening.

The author has done a lot of research into the book and gave me some insight into some 19th century books on seafaring that I have read. I did not appreciate her feminist take on historical issues, however.
