Edited by David Norton, this important scholarly edition presents a revised KJV text based on a thorough evaluation of textual variants in current renderings as well as the extant notes of the 1611 Translators. The text itself is presented in paragraph form, with marginal notes, and adopts modern conventions of spelling and punctuation to make it easy to read and use. The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible was originally published in 2005 in a large format and, like the original King James Bible and successive editions until the nineteenth century, included the Apocrypha. As it has become known in the marketplace, a demand has become apparent for this Bible in a smaller, more manageable format. Its is therefore now being issued in Personal Size editions, either with or without the Apocrypha. This particular Bible contains just the Old and New Testaments. It is printed on Bible paper, has gold page-edges and two ribbon markers, and is bound in black calfskin leather.

The best in English Bibles since 1611

Naturally every person will have different preferences for the format of a personal bible. My rating, though moderately influenced by individual opinion, reflects a standard of textual purity and experience which I believe to be ideal for most Christians.
The most important feature, very rare before this publication, is the paragraph format. By indenting the first lines of the text according to the paragraph marks supplied by the translators, rather than verse-by-verse, multi-verse sentences are rejoined, thought patterns are restored, and thus, meaning is clarified by strengthening contextual relationships, a critically necessary element of accurate hermeneutics. Accordingly, the opening letters of mid-sentence verses have been returned to their proper cases. Verse numbers are superscript, following the pattern of modern translations. Letters, such as the one of the Jerusalem counsel in Acts 15:23-29, are indented for contrast.
As an extreme example of the foregoing advantages, Psalm 98:8-9 contains a verse break in the middle of a clause ("let the hills be joyful together 9 before the Lord;") which, without the paragraph format, can be very disruptive to even the casual reader.
It is important to note that the original paragraph breaks, to which Norton is faithful, leave larger paragraphs and generally follow the situational setting, in narration, or the subject in persuasive prose. The original KJV mistakenly leaves off paragraph marks after Acts 20, and though the majority of editions (based on a 1769 Oxford publication) follow suit, Norton supplies the missing breaks.
Norton took a daring but much appreciable liberty in formatting poetry line by line. As he himself confesses, there is no straightforward way to either discern each line unit or even distinguish a poetic body from mere poetic language within prose. I am not always satisfied with his attempts at either, but I value the enforcement of the much-overlooked poetic strength of Scripture, and the KJV's linguistic richness. Here is a small example:
Surely he hath borne our griefs,
and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted.
(Isa. 53:4)
Another valuable editorial liberty is the addition of quotation marks to mark speech and references, usually easy to place, and always a further strengthening of meaning. Norton uses single quotation marks primarily, and double within that, in reverse of the modern tradition.
The single column layout differs from the two-column majority of editions, and though one such as I transitioning from one to the other may find longer lines of text a little harder to read at first, the new format follows that of most books. The footnotes, then, can be aligned with their parent text without needing more cluttering superscript. No need to scan a center column for a matching superscript letter.
There are no cross-references for a cleaner presentation. There are no maps, concordances, or other accessories, but instead, as with most Cambridge bibles, the original preface from the translators to the reader, a beautifully written and very informative piece I think indispensable.
There are a few revisions that are rarely noticed for one accustomed to the 1769 "received text": Punctuation has been lightened according to modern taste, and occasionally, altered words have been restored to the original form when shades of meaning are affected (e.g., the introduction cites the restoration of "shamefacedness" to "shamefastness"). All revisions greatly respect the intent of the translators.
One modernization I regard unnecessary: words that added an "n" before a vowel sound, such as my and mine, thy and thine, no and none, have been revised to current practice (a and an excepted, of course). I feel it intrudes on the archaic flavor of the spoken sound, but you can judge for yourself.
I only regret that this publication does not have a economy leather binding option, which would make it more accessible to thin budgets. The hardcover option is affordable enough, if one can adapt to its awkwardness.
Whether or not the KJV is your preferred version, as it is mine, this edition presents this most majestic work cleaned and unencumbered for any reader to behold and feast on its splendor.
ADDENDUM:
After several months of using this bible regularly, nothing of my review has changed. A few additional observations, however, might be useful.
This edition notably emphasizes text flow over navigation and study. The superscript verse numbers are small enough that, though they are unobtrusive, they can be confused with quotation marks, and vice versa, during brisk reading. I would personally like to see the verse numbers on the margin of the text instead, as the old Cambridge Paragraph Bible of Scrivener had it, not only resolving the superscript-quotation conflict but making it more navigable and enhancing textual flow simultaneously.
The lack of cross-references proved to be more of a challenge as I made this my primary bible, particularly when I wanted to track internal references to their source. It is bound to disappoint anyone who is seeking a research-friendly bible, but remain the delight of those with an eye and a need for beauty and purity.

Don't purchase this edition of KJV

This Cambridge Bible is not of the quality I've come to expect from Cambridge. The paper looks like newspaper and the leather is easily scratched with the slightest touch of a fingernail. The two elements combine to make a nasty rendition of the KJV in paragraph form. Sad to say that this was produced by Cambridge Bibles. Look elsewhere for a KJV Bible in paragraph form.
